Tim's been working through a great book called "Blues You Can Use" by John Ganapes. It's got lots of solos that work specific blues techniques and as the book progresses, the solos get more challenging. Also, it comes with a CD that you can play along with. I made a recording of Tim playing one of the solos. His homework was to learn it by heart. He nailed it. You can listen to it here.

Rob is a big B.B. King fan. He's been working on several B.B. King solos. The first chorus of "Sweet Sixteen" was his latest assignment. Today was the exam. He played really well. Have a listen here.

Open Tunings
I found an interesting site that has some good info on open tunings. There are some really good chord ideas. The rest of the site is a bit, um, weird. Anyways, check out the pages on Open D, Open G, Drop D and Low C. If you've never experimented with open tunings, particularly if you like to write your own songs, you should definately check this out. You'll get instant inspiration. Here's the link.

Brahm has been working on his blues playing. He's been learning the intro and solo from "Crosscut Saw" by Albert King. The intro was sounding really good today, so I decided to record it. You can hear it here. Brahm's big ongoing project it to learn and perform "Eruption" by Van Halen. You may just be hearing soon...

New Project - 2006
Right after the holidays, I got a phone call from my student Wayne. Wayne, Bill and Drew are all in a band called Papa So Mean. Wayne told me that the band had been asked by Bill's sister-in-law Glenna McConnell, who is a singer/songwriter, to be her back up band at an upcoming show. Wayne asked me to help the band prepare. I think it's going to be a great learning experience for the band and it will definitely help them become a tighter unit. More to follow...

Daniel is the new edition to my Saturday roster. He's Ryan's brother. I actually had one lesson with Daniel right before the holidays. He must have practiced hard the last two weeks because he made some real progress. He doubled the tempos for the warm up exercises and the scales! His chords are sounding good and his powerchords are really good. I taught him "Rebellion(Lies)" by the Arcade Fire and the intro of "Wake Me Up When September Ends" by Green Day. Keep up the great work, Daniel.

First week back from vacation and it's review time. Céline actually worked for most of the holidays so she didn't have a lot of time to practice. We started off the lesson by concentrating on technique. I noticed during the warm up exercises that Céline's left hand position was a little awkward. I suggested an alternate thumb placement. She found it a bit difficult at first because she was used to her way. She's going to work on it over the next week. With this in mind, we then reviewed all her scales. Next, we played through all her chord progressions, which sounded really good. We finished the lesson by playing one of the songs she's been working on. Overall, it was a good review and a great lesson.
